Universities cultivate the intellectual person with wide and deep knowledge, and flexible thinking ability, while they are acquiring a wide range of knowledge, and researching or learning in many kinds of specialized fields.
There are two types of courses: one is the 4-year course, the other is the 6-year course. They are separated based on the subjects students major in.
Originally, universities were founded long ago for they had to teach professional skills of occupations, such as clergyman, lawyer and doctor, to young people. They expanded the majors of study, science, humanities and social science, and contributed to the development of industry with their research achievements.
In Japan, universities have cooperated with the government and industrial world recently, in order to solve the social problems such as its decreasing birthrate and aging population as well as develop its industry.

There are two main choices after graduation from universities. Firstly, the graduate will get a new job in many kinds of fields, even if they don’t study related to the majors at the university. This is because the companies in Japan usually make more which university they have graduated from than which major they have specialized in.
On the other hand, the students who graduate from universities will go on to the next stage of education, like graduates or vocational colleges (mainly for the students who want to get specific certification).
