There are two types of Japanese Language School in Japan: one is “Japanese language institutes”, the other is “Preparatory Japanese language programs offered at private universities and junior colleges”. The former institutions are managed by educational foundations, public interest incorporated foundations, private companies, voluntary organizations, individuals and so on. On the other hand, the latter are operated by private universities or junior colleges.
Many students go to these language institutions to learn Japanese language and other subjects in Japanese, such as mathematics, English, science, geography and so on. This is because these subjects are necessary for those who will take EJU, the entrance examination for the universities in Japan.
Normally, the only international students from countries where formal school education is more than 12 years can enroll in those Japanese language schools. However, if they haven’t finished over 12-year formal school education, they have to complete university preparatory courses authorized by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan, or they will be requested to go to formal education schools by taking a few years at a university or other higher education institution or a university preparatory program in their mother country.

There are some students who already live and work in Japan and they aim at improving their skills or changing their jobs by learning Japanese language deeply at Japanese language schools.
However, most students come from foreign countries and want to go on to the next stage of education, university, graduate and vocational college. Then, they choose which Japanese language school they will enroll in based on what kind of higher educational institution they want to enter.
